The GULAG exhibition in Moscow

The majority of the relics, documents, photographs and first-hand reports on the Stalinist GULAG system presented in this show were assembled by the human rights organization “Memorial” in Moscow throughout the former Soviet Union beginning in the early 1990s. They not only document the vast dimensions of the GULAG system itself, but also convey a sense of the immense suffering inflicted upon millions of human beings. The exhibition can presently not be shown in Russia.

“Memorial” carries out its work in extremely modest facilities in Moscow. The Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation is presently working with “Memorial” to develop a concept for presenting at least a portion of the exhibition objects to the public in Moscow on a permanent basis. “Memorial” does not have the funds necessary for that purpose – approximately 150,000 euros – at its disposal. No support from the state of Russia or the city of Moscow can be expected at this time.
